Without the software, the POS hardware is completely useless. While the hardware helps transport the data, it is the software that makes sense of it. You can use lightweight versions of point-of-sale software on a standard pc for very simple accounting / management purposes. An entirely separate, integrated system is ideal, because you maximize your revenues and profits through the hardware/software relationship.
Before you purchase your software, you'll need to make sure it is 100% compatible with your hardware configuration. POS software that was programmed to run in a Windows environment will have a difficult time running on a Unix system, and newer releases of Windows based point-of-sale software might not run properly on older versions of Windows. Be sure to check for compatibility issues while you are researching your software needs.
Point-of-sale software will make your business run smoothly. All of your daily activities become automated with a few simple point-and-clicks of the mouse, and your margin of human error is hugely reduced when it comes to mathematical computations.
