Bar codes are those ubiquitous black and white labels with the little bars and numbers. They are included on nearly every single packaged product on the planet. All point-of-sale systems worth their salt have the ability to read these barcodes and pass the information to the POS software.
At the surface, bar codes are not much more than a sequence of black lines and digits. The bar code scanner reads the unique configuration of lines with a laser that measures the differences in reflection from the code. Black areas on the white surface are easily identifiable due to the light signature it gives off.
Once the code is scanned, the software double checks it by comparing the UPC (Universal Product Code) numbers. Once this number is found to be a match, data that corresponds with the UPC number can be looked up in the database. The data contained in the database can contain vast amounts of information pertaining to the product in question.
These codes are vital for simplifying and automating your business. With the information from a simple scan, you can compare prices, check sales records, inventory, price, and more.
